Copyblogger has a great post today about utilizing ‘digital scraps’ to produce new content. Although the recommendation of repurposing media byproducts to jumpstart new products (or enhance existing ones) is simple, his tips can also be applied to place based media networks and campaigns.

A few ideas:

* Interactive cross-channel campaigns like Be Here benefit from a wide array of content submissions and messages. Encourage users to send in their media nuggets that don’t necessarily fit into their honeymoon album or family photo wall. Think of digital photo walls as the perfect place to submit that photo that is returned at the top of the “Interesting” search result query on Flickr.

* Wiffiti is basically a digital stream of consciousness conversation. There’s no need for users to overthink your CTA. In fact, simple CTAs produce more organic (not to mention more free-form, engaging and fun) content streams. For images, channel your inner Duchamp; txts can be sent in the spirit of Burroughs.

* Posting a contextually-relevant Wiffiti screen on your website invites a constant flow of user input that is automatically collated and displayed to your readers. This online version (whether embedded on Facebook, a dedicated microsite, or within an affiliated blog post), while technically a byproduct of a place based product, is a no-brainer as a value-add.

* The most successful place based apps often mashup multiple social media utilities (e.g. Wiffiti, Foursquare, Twitter, Flickr). Why not join the party?

In the place based mediasphere, encouraging recycling isn’t just the responsible thing to do, it’s the most fun for your viewers, too ;)

Okay, so that title was a little much, but those X-Games promos sure do like their power adjectives… And we’re excited to display our place-based social media platform at the Winter X-Games!

I wish I had on-site photos to share, but I’ll have to settle for some bar pics of our real-time Twitter/Flickr screens for XGames that we rolled out with Zoom Media & Marketing. The screens captured tweets and photos from correspondents at the games, and streamed them live onto screens in bars nationwide…

Let’s just hope the screens didn’t showcase too many images of Shaun White’s unfortunate beat-up face…

We’ve had a lot of interest lately from Wiffiti users who are looking for advanced features, more customization, and professional moderation. So, in addition to personal responses (always feel free to contact us directly), I wanted to address some of those issues here as well. Keep an eye on the blog for user questions as they come in.

Most of the LocaModa Feature posts on this blog capture the work we’re doing for major agencies and brands, with massive displays and custom cross-channel integration work. But don’t be put off if you’re a nonprofit or smaller network looking to integrate our services! We’re currently running a Self-Managed Apps Program which offers a menu of advanced features catered to smaller organizations like schools and churches.

We’re also always open to feedback from smaller organizations that have found success using Wiffiti. We’re always adding new features to our roadmap based on your ideas, so keep them coming. For example, after hearing that you’d like a “reveal” feature to showcase the Wiffiti background images at timed intervals, we got to work on integrating this into our custom feature set. We’re also plugging away at a bundle of new options for custom photo display, coming soon to the advanced features list!

It seemed a while ago that brands and companies were obsessed getting users to create user generated content (UGC). They held countless promotions on YouTube and this even led to creation of sites like Brickfish which are devoted solely to UGC contests. Now, the Twitter-craze has ensured a steady stream of UGC in the form of tweets and in many cases, Flickr images and TwitPics.

The question is no longer how can brands accumulate more UGC, but how are brands leveraging their pre-existing UGC to their advantage?

Skittles recently experimented with this by redirecting their website to their YouTube channel, Flickr photostream, Twitter chatter and Facebook profile. But brands can take this one step further. Instead of just appealing to people who seek their brand online, they can (and should!) use their UGC to attract an offline audience using digital out of home.
